History of the organization

Created in 2005, Living Labyrinths for Peace is the vision of artist Sandra Wasko-Flood. Following an inspirational experience at the Great Kiva Indian ceremonial center at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico in 1991, Wasko-Flood was led to create Dance of the Labyrinth, an interactive installation of computer programmed light box images designed to be walked.

Her own practice of traversing the meditative glass boxes installed in her Washington, D.C. studio convinced Wasko-Flood of the value of labyrinths, and she began sharing hers with the community. An outreach opportunity through the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities allowed Wasko-Flood to develop a program for area schools in which children painted labyrinths, walked them, and made wishes for peace.

As a founding member of the Labyrinth Society in 1998, Wasko-Flood directed the Society’s first public project two years later. The Society’s’s labyrinth walking demonstration for inner peace on the east lawn of the U.S. Capitol became the direct impetus for the establishment of LLP.
